Which AI search engine has the biggest market share?
ChatGPT leads every chatbot market share measure we checked, but the size of that lead depends on what is counted: about 80% of the clicks chatbots send to websites, about 56% of visits to chatbot websites, and about 46% of the app and web audience. Google's Gemini is second on each of those measures. Google AI Overviews, which sit inside Google Search rather than in a chatbot, report the largest audience of any AI answer feature: over 2.5 billion monthly active users, by Google's own count.[1][3][8][13]
So treat any single "market share" figure with care. The sources below measure website visits, referral clicks, modeled audiences, survey answers and company-reported users. Each answers a different question, and they disagree most about Claude.

Five yardsticks, five different questions
Before comparing numbers, name the unit. Each provider counts something different.
- Website visits (Similarweb). How often people open each chatbot's website. Similarweb reports its app data separately, so this share covers website visits only. App sessions and assistants built into other products are not in it.[1][2]
- Referral clicks (StatCounter). How many visits each chatbot sends to websites that run StatCounter's tracker. StatCounter describes its network as over 3 billion page views a month across over 1 million websites. Grok is excluded because it does not pass referral data in its header.[5]
- Audience (Sensor Tower). "True Audience" share, which Sensor Tower defines as unique users across mobile apps and web. It is a modeled estimate.[7]
- Survey (Pew Research Center). The share of US adults who say they ever use a given chatbot, from a survey of 5,119 adults weighted to represent the US adult population.[9]
- Company-reported users. Each company picks its own unit and definition. OpenAI reports weekly users. Google reports monthly users.[10][12]
A visit share answers "where do people go?" A referral share answers "who sends clicks to websites?" An audience share answers "how many different people use it?" None of them answers "how often does my brand appear in answers?"
Website visits: ChatGPT lost share, then won some back
Similarweb's monthly updates show a sharp shift over twelve months, followed by a partial reversal.[1]
| Share of generative AI website visits | October 2025 | April 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 71.8% | 53.7% | 56.4% |
| Gemini | 13.6% | 26.7% | 25.0% |
| Claude | 2.3% | 8.0% | 9.6% |
| DeepSeek | 4.1% | 4.0% | 3.4% |
| Grok | 2.8% | 3.2% | 2.3% |
| Copilot | 2.0% | 2.0% | 1.5% |
| Perplexity | 2.5% | 1.5% | 0.9% |
The category grew fast underneath these shares. Similarweb reports that average monthly visits across generative AI platforms grew 70% year over year to 9.5 billion for June 2025 to May 2026. It also says ChatGPT's absolute visit count stayed roughly flat, so most of its share loss came from the category growing around it.[2]
Our reading: a visit share quoted without its month can be several points out of date. ChatGPT's share fell by about 18 points between October 2025 and April 2026, then rose again through September. Gemini has slipped since April. Claude kept climbing.
Referral clicks: ChatGPT still sends most of the traffic
When the question becomes "which chatbot sends people to websites?", ChatGPT's lead widens. In September 2026, StatCounter attributed 80.48% of worldwide chatbot referrals to ChatGPT, followed by Gemini (10.91%), Perplexity (5.85%), Microsoft Copilot (1.79%) and Claude (0.95%).[3]
The US mix differs. There, ChatGPT had 75.17%, Gemini 13.26%, Copilot 6.64%, Perplexity 3.02% and Claude 1.81% in the same month.[4]
Referral shares also move quickly. StatCounter's April 2026 release put Claude at 2.91% for March 2026, more than double its February share. The same release noted that Claude's weekly share peaked at 3.6% in mid-March before falling to 2.49% the next week, and its CEO suggested the jump may have been partly news-driven.[5] By September, Claude was under 1%.
A second referral dataset agrees on the leader
Ahrefs measures a different panel: 115,254 sites using its free Web Analytics tool. In September 2026, AI search sources sent 0.43% of tracked traffic and ChatGPT alone sent 0.34%, while Google sent 23.96%. Ahrefs calls ChatGPT "the largest AI referrer."[15]
Our arithmetic: 0.34 divided by 0.43 means ChatGPT sent roughly four-fifths of the AI search visits in Ahrefs' dataset. That is close to StatCounter's 80%, even though the two panels and methods differ.
AI referrals are still small next to search
StatCounter's September 2026 comparison of referral sources put search at 91%, social at 8.61% and AI chatbots at 0.4%. In its head-to-head view, Google sent 99.61% of the referrals counted between Google and ChatGPT.[6][14] Note the denominator: StatCounter compares only the referral categories it lists, while Ahrefs reports a share of all tracked traffic, including direct visits.
Audience and survey data: a closer race
Sensor Tower's State of AI 2026 report says ChatGPT's True Audience share fell below 50% for the first time in March 2026. TechCrunch, reporting on the same report, gave end-of-May shares of 46.4% for ChatGPT, 27.7% for Gemini and 10.3% for Claude. It also gave monthly user estimates of over 1.1 billion, 662 million and 245 million respectively.[7][8] The full report is gated, so we have relied on Sensor Tower's public summary and TechCrunch's account of it.
Sensor Tower also reports that Claude's True Audience grew 452% year over year in May, and that its US share rose from 4.4% to nearly 14% over the same period. It links the shift away from a single dominant player partly to Claude's "rapid adoption among professional and high-intent user segments."[7]
Pew's survey shows a similar order among US adults:[9]
- 49% say they ever use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024 (Pew notes that the 2024 question was worded differently).
- ChatGPT 44%, Gemini 24%, Copilot 17%, Meta AI 14%, Grok 8%, Claude 6%.
- 42% say they use chatbots to search for information.
- 60% say they read AI summaries at the top of search engine results.
The last point matters for marketers. More US adults say they read AI summaries in search results than say they use any chatbot.
Google's side: AI Overviews and AI Mode
Chatbot share tables leave out Google's biggest AI surfaces. At Google I/O on 19 May 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has passed 1 billion. Google's Search post from the same day said AI Mode queries had been "more than doubling every quarter since launch."[13][16]
In Alphabet's Q2 2026 remarks on 22 July, Pichai repeated that AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users, said the Gemini app has 950 million, and said Google now sends "billions of clicks to websites every week through AI features in Search." He also said Google has combined AI Overviews and AI Mode into one Search experience.[12]
These are company-reported figures. The remarks do not define how a monthly active user is counted. We did not find an independent count of AI Overviews users; Pew's finding that 60% of US adults read AI summaries in search results is the closest independent measure we saw.
Our reading: a click from an AI Overview arrives from google.com, so referral-based datasets are likely to count it as search, not as an AI chatbot. StatCounter's FAQ describes treating clicks from Bing's chat feature as Bing search referrals in the same way.[17] That means a headline such as "ChatGPT has 80% of AI search" leaves out the AI answer surface with the largest reported audience.
Why the numbers disagree
The sources do not contradict each other so much as measure different things. The clearest cases:
Claude: large in visits, small in clicks
Claude has 9.6% of chatbot website visits (Similarweb) and 10.3% of the app and web audience (Sensor Tower), but 0.95% of worldwide chatbot referral clicks (StatCounter) and 6% of US adults (Pew).[1][3][8][9]
Our reading: we cannot tell from public data why the gap exists. Possible explanations include a usage mix weighted toward work tasks that need fewer outbound links, answers that link out less often, and the makeup of StatCounter's site network. None of these has been tested here.
Perplexity: small in visits, larger in clicks
Perplexity runs the other way: 0.9% of website visits but 5.85% of worldwide referral clicks.[1][3] An answer engine built around source links plausibly sends more clicks per visit. That is our interpretation, not a measured finding.
Gemini: company count versus panel estimate
Alphabet reports 950 million monthly Gemini app users. Sensor Tower estimates 662 million Gemini users across apps and web.[8][12] One is a company count with no published definition. The other is a modeled panel estimate. Neither is "wrong", but they are not interchangeable.
Weekly versus monthly, and the missing Anthropic number
OpenAI reported over 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users on 27 February 2026. Its DevDay 2026 recap later referred to "our collective 1.2B weekly users", without breaking that total down by product.[10][11] Weekly figures cannot be compared directly with Google's monthly figures.
We found no user count published by Anthropic as of 20 October 2026. Every Claude user figure in this article is a third-party estimate.
Assistants built into other products
Similarweb notes that Meta AI is distributed inside apps people already use.[2] Embedded assistants like this are hard to see in website-visit and referral data. Surveys such as Pew's capture them better, which helps explain why Meta AI (14%) and Copilot (17%) rank higher in Pew's survey than in the visit data.
How to choose which AI engines to track
Market share tells you where people are. It does not tell you whether your brand appears in the answers they get. Our reading of the data above, as a starting point for a tracking set:
- ChatGPT. First on every chatbot yardstick. Track it.
- Google AI Overviews. The largest reported audience of any AI answer feature. If Google sends you meaningful traffic, track it, and consider AI Mode as it grows.
- Gemini. Second on visits, referrals, audience and the survey.
- Claude. Third on visits and audience but small on referrals. It matters most when your buyers are technical or professional users, the segment Sensor Tower credits for its growth.
- Perplexity and Copilot. Larger in referral data than in visit data, and Copilot is stronger in the US. Add them if your own logs show them sending visitors.
Then check the yardstick that is specific to you. Your own AI referral traffic, from analytics and server logs, shows which assistants actually send people to your site. Next, define a set of buyer-style prompts and run them on the engines you chose. An LLM rank tracker records whether and where you are named, and share of voice compares your presence with competitors across the same prompts.
CiteLadder tracks how brands appear in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answers, analyzes the sources those answers cite, and runs Site Health checks on your website. You can use the hosted AI visibility product at citeladder.com, or self-host the open source code, published under AGPL-3.0.[18] If Perplexity or Copilot matter in your referral data, confirm that any tool you choose covers them.
Frequently asked questions
What is ChatGPT's market share in 2026?
It depends on the measure. In September 2026, ChatGPT had 56.4% of generative AI website visits (Similarweb) and 80.48% of chatbot referral clicks to websites (StatCounter). Sensor Tower put its app and web audience share at 46.4% at the end of May 2026. Always quote the measure and month with the number.
Is Gemini catching up with ChatGPT?
Gemini roughly doubled its share of chatbot website visits between October 2025 and April 2026, then slipped from 26.7% to 25.0% by September 2026 while ChatGPT recovered. On referral clicks, Gemini is a distant second at 10.91%.
How many people use Claude?
Anthropic has not published a user count that we could find. Sensor Tower estimated 245 million monthly users in its June 2026 report, and Pew found 6% of US adults say they ever use Claude. These are estimates with different methods, so they should not be combined.
Do Google AI Overviews count as AI search?
Yes, by most definitions, but chatbot market share tables usually leave them out. Google reports over 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews, higher than any chatbot user figure cited in this article, though the counting methods differ. Because AI Overviews sit inside Google Search, their clicks tend to show up as search traffic.
Which AI engines should I track?
Start with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini, which lead the public data. Add Claude for technical or professional audiences. Then use your own referral data to decide whether Perplexity, Copilot or others deserve a place.
