Are there ads in AI answers?
Yes. ChatGPT shows labeled ads below some responses for Free and Go users, and Google sells ads around and inside AI Overviews while testing several ad formats in AI Mode. Claude and the Gemini app showed no ads in the sources we read. OpenAI and Google both say their ads are labeled as sponsored, and OpenAI says its ads are kept separate from the answer. That label is the key point for brands: a paid placement next to or inside an answer is not the same thing as being named or cited by the engine, and the two should be measured apart.
Ad availability changes month to month. Everything below is dated to the source, and we read every source on 20 October 2026.

How ChatGPT ads arrived: a timeline
OpenAI's main announcement page has been updated several times, so search snippets of it show different dates. The page itself is dated by its latest update (11 August 2026) and states that it was originally published on 9 February 2026.[2] The help center confirms that testing started in the United States on 9 February 2026.[6]
| Date | What OpenAI announced | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 16 Jan 2026 | Ad principles published; plan to test ads in the US for Free and Go users | [1] |
| 9 Feb 2026 | Test begins in the US for logged-in adults on Free and Go | [2] |

| 5 May 2026 | Beta self-serve Ads Manager; cost-per-click bidding added to CPM; Conversions API and pixel measurement | [3] |
| 7 May 2026 | Planned pilots in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea | [2] |

| 31 Aug 2026 | OpenAI reports a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days; self-service opens in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa | [4] |
| 5 Oct 2026 | Visual ad format to be tested during image generation in the US; new measurement partners | [5] |
Two country counts circulate, and they measure different things. OpenAI's 31 August post says ChatGPT Ads are "available in over 40 countries."[4] The Ads Manager availability page listed 63 countries as available for self-service on 20 October 2026, but that list describes where an advertiser's legal entity can be based and billed, not where users see ads.[7]
How ChatGPT ads work
OpenAI's help center describes the current format and rules:[6]
- Placement: one ad unit may appear below a ChatGPT response. A multi-image visual format is in test during image generation.
- Selection: the ad system weighs the current conversation, the ad's copy and landing page, advertiser targeting, and, if personalization is on, signals from past chats and memory. When several ads are eligible, it considers "relevance and advertiser bids."
- Exclusions: no ads for users identified as under 18, none near personal health, mental health or political topics, and none in Temporary Chats. Personalized ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
- Opting out: users can upgrade to Plus or Pro, or switch the Free plan to an ads-free mode with lower message limits.
On the buying side, OpenAI's August post says cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding "now account for the majority of campaigns."[4]
What OpenAI says about answer independence
OpenAI's position, repeated in every ads post we read, is: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you."[2] The help center adds that ads "run on separate systems from our chat model" and that advertisers cannot "shape, rank, or alter" responses.[6]
Our reading: this is OpenAI's own claim. We did not find a public independent audit of answer independence. The brand suitability pilots OpenAI announced with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science in October concern where ads appear, not whether ads affect answers.[5] Until outside testing exists, treat answer independence as a stated policy, and keep your own records of what answers say over time.
How often do ChatGPT answers carry an ad?
Two published measurements give very different answers. Neither is wrong on its own terms. They count different things.
| Study | Figure | What was counted | Period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Similarweb | 26% (up from 14% in May) | Share of US desktop ChatGPT responses with an ad, from a panel of real user conversations | June 2026 |
| Seer Interactive | 77% | Share of tracked responses with an ad, across the prompt sets its clients track | About two weeks to 28 July 2026 |
Similarweb reports that ChatGPT ad penetration on US desktop rose from 14% of responses in May 2026 to 26% in June 2026.[8] Its August press release repeats the 26% figure without the US desktop qualifier and says the data comes "from real user panel conversations, not synthetic prompts."[10] One detail to watch: the opening line of Similarweb's own article gives 26% for both May and June, while its body and FAQ give 14% for May.[8]
Seer Interactive reports that ads appeared in 77% of tracked responses, collected through an AI visibility tracker across its client portfolio, with ads visible in 96 of 97 client tracking workspaces. Seer calls this "a developing study."[11]
Why they differ (our reading). Similarweb measures conversations real people had, and those plausibly include coding, writing and other chats with little commercial intent. Seer measures prompts that brands chose to track, which tend to be about products, categories and competitors. Those are the conversations ads are designed for. The periods also differ (June versus July), and the rollout was moving fast. A reasonable interpretation is that ads appear in a minority of all ChatGPT conversations but in a large share of commercial ones. Neither number tells you the rate for your own prompts.
When in a conversation ads appear
Similarweb reports that about a third of ChatGPT ad impressions come in the first response of a session, falling to single digits by the third response, with about a fifth arriving ten or more messages in.[9] A separate Similarweb article says 66.3% of ads appear "after the second prompt or later."[8] Read together, the first response is the single most likely position, but most ads arrive later in the conversation.
The same Similarweb article gives a 0.50% click-through rate for the ad unit in June 2026, and notes that 65.3% of sessions continue after an ad appears.[8]
Ads and organic answers rarely name the same brand
Seer's data adds the most useful finding for visibility teams. Across ads from 3,697 unique advertisers, the advertiser appeared in ChatGPT's response 5.4% of the time and was cited as a source 3.3% of the time.[11] On a brand's own branded prompts, only 7.3% of responses carried that brand's own ad.[11] Seer also recorded a competitor ad on a branded prompt.
What this means: the brand ChatGPT recommends and the brand in the ad below it are usually different. A team that only watches organic brand mentions in ChatGPT will miss a competitor sitting directly under its best answer. A team that only watches its ad dashboard will miss whether the answer itself names it. These are two separate measurements.
Google: ads around and inside AI answers
AI Overviews
Google's Ads Help page states that ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all 200+ markets where AI Overviews are available. Ads inside AI Overviews are available in English on mobile and desktop in 12 countries: Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore and the US.[12]
Three details matter for planning. Text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically. Advertisers cannot target AI Overview placements directly or opt out of them. Google Ads does not offer segmented reporting when ads serve inside AI Overviews.[12]
Semrush, studying more than 600,000 keywords across 10 industries in its US desktop database from November 2025 to April 2026, found that Google Ads and AI Overviews now appear on the same results page "roughly 2x more often than they did a year ago." It also notes that Google Ads "still doesn't show us which paid queries trigger AI Overviews."[17]
AI Mode
Google has run several AI Mode ad tests in sequence:
- December 2025: Google said it was "testing ads in AI Mode in the US," where ads "may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses."[13]
- January 2026: Google introduced Direct Offers, a Google Ads pilot that lets advertisers show exclusive offers, such as a discount, in AI Mode.[14]
- February 2026: Google described a test of a sponsored format that shows retailers selling the products AI Mode recommends organically, labeled as sponsored.[15]
- May 2026: At Google Marketing Live, Google announced tests of Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers. The second lets ads appear inside AI Mode's recommendation lists. Both include "an independent AI explainer" and a "Sponsored" label.[16] That post did not list test markets.
Similarweb's August release says "nearly 30% of ad-eligible Google AI Mode queries already show ads."[10] The release does not define "ad-eligible," so treat the figure as directional.
Our reading: Highlighted Answers are the format closest to organic visibility. A paid entry can sit inside the same list as the brands AI Mode recommends on merit. Measuring "position in the list" without separating sponsored entries would overstate or understate a brand's organic rank.
The Gemini app
Google's Nick Fox told WIRED that "there are no ads in the Gemini app at this point," and, asked whether Google was ruling them out: "No, we're not ruling them out."[18] That is the latest primary statement we could open. Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search products, not ads in the Gemini app.
What the revenue and advertiser claims show
OpenAI reports a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, "tens of thousands of advertisers," and more than 50 technology and measurement partners.[4] These are company-reported figures, not audited results.
OpenAI's posts also cite advertiser outcomes, such as an unnamed ecommerce advertiser reaching a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days[4] and a partner-reported cost per acquisition 15.3% lower than a blended paid-search benchmark for one brand.[5] These are selected examples chosen by the seller. They show that some campaigns worked, not what a typical advertiser should expect.
What this means for brand visibility
Our reading. Paid placement has become part of the AI answer page, but it is still a different thing from being in the answer. For anyone measuring AI visibility, four practical rules follow from the sources above:
- Never count an ad as a mention, citation or rank. A sponsored card below a ChatGPT answer, or a Highlighted Answer in an AI Mode list, is bought. If it is mixed into organic counts, your share of voice rises with ad spend and stops describing what the engine chooses on its own.
- Record ads as their own evidence. Store the advertiser, the prompt, the engine, the date and the answer above it. Seer's data shows the useful question is often "whose ad sits under the answer that names us?"
- Expect the rate to depend on your prompt set. The 26% and 77% figures show how much the sample matters. Commercial and branded prompts will see more ads than a general panel.
- Keep "not applicable" separate from "zero." Claude and the Gemini app showed no ads in the sources we read. That is not the same as an engine where ads exist but none appeared for your prompts.
The same logic applies to sources. Seer found advertisers were cited as a source only 3.3% of the time, so citation tracking and ad tracking answer different questions.
CiteLadder tracks how brands appear in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answers. It records ChatGPT Search ads separately from citations, and ads never count as mentions, citations or position. Other engines show ads as not applicable in CiteLadder, so ads around Google AI Overviews need to be tracked another way. CiteLadder is open source under AGPL-3.0 at github.com/abhij1306/CiteLadder, with a hosted version at citeladder.com.[20]
Frequently asked questions
Do paying ChatGPT users see ads?
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not have ads. Free and Go users may see them where ads are available. Free users can switch to an ads-free mode with lower message limits.[6]
Can a brand pay to be mentioned inside a ChatGPT answer?
Not according to OpenAI. Ads appear as a separate, labeled unit below the response, and OpenAI says advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses.[6] That is OpenAI's stated policy; we found no independent audit of it.
Are there ads in Claude or the Gemini app?
Anthropic said on 4 February 2026 that Claude will remain ad-free.[19] Google's Nick Fox said there are no ads in the Gemini app "at this point," without ruling them out.[18] Google does sell ads in AI Overviews and is testing them in AI Mode.
Can advertisers choose or avoid AI Overview placements?
No. Google says advertisers cannot target AI Overview placements directly or opt out of them, and Google Ads offers no segmented reporting for ads that serve inside AI Overviews.[12]
Why do estimates of how often ChatGPT shows ads differ so much?
They sample different conversations. Similarweb's 26% covers US desktop conversations from a user panel in June 2026. Seer's 77% covers prompts its clients chose to track, which lean commercial, in July 2026.[8][11]
